Adobe Team Projects and Premiere Pro with EVO Shared Storage (video)

team-projects-blog-header

Collaboration is a necessity for creative teams — projects require contributions from many people and disciplines. You have your assistant editors, VFX artists, animators, audio post-team, and colorists. Until now, the norm has been to have everyone take their turn with project files — or use project locking features with EVO. But now, everyone can work on the same project, even across multiple Adobe applications.

Adobe CC Enterprise and Teams subscribers with Premiere Pro CC 2017 can now natively share, manage, and collaborate within a single team project file from anywhere in the world — a huge step forward for collaborative post production workflows with Premiere.

How does it work?

Adobe Team Projects is a “hosted collaboration service.”

Adobe isn’t hosting your media or trying to stream it from the cloud.

Instead, Team Projects tracks every creative decision, every splice, keyframe, movement, and adjustment — then creates a reference — and stores that reference file in the cloud, so your team can sync your actions to the media on their timeline.

Which means that everyone on your team will still need access to the project media.

How do team projects work with my SAN or NAS network storage?

For team projects to work, all of your collaborators will need access to the project assets. The easiest way to handle this is to have all of your project media available over SAN or NAS network volumes. Shared storage will still be an important part of this workflow.

When you’re working in a shared environment, having centralized storage with enough bandwidth to support multiple editors, colorists, etc., is vital.

When a collaborator joins a team project, Adobe will just look at the same file path from the original project file and map the media automatically on other networked workstations, regardless of whether the originating project file was created on Mac or Windows.

Working with remote editors

To expand their creative talent pool, many companies are looking at hiring remote editors and artists to collaborate on projects. Until recently, remote workflows were riddled with inefficiencies.

As a remote collaborator on a team project, there are great options for sharing media with your in-office collaborators. Using Adobe’s Creative Cloud storage, Dropbox, Hightail, or even Google Drive, you can share lightweight proxy media, animations, stills, and other assets from almost anywhere in the world.

To improve the efficiency of cloud-based workflows, EVO lets you upload media to several third party cloud services, and can also index your cloud storage and present them as shared workspaces for all of your workstations.

Premiere is also keeping track of linked media on a per-user basis, so a remote editor and a local editor can use two different instances of the same media without having to relink media files every time they share the project. It makes the team projects workflow very convenient.

What are the limitations of Team Projects?

Currently the Team Projects feature is only available for Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Prelude, and only to Adobe CC Teams and Enterprise customers.

If your team uses Adobe CC apps but does NOT have a Teams or Enterprise subscription, there are many other collaborative features available in EVO Shared Storage that don’t require Team Projects at all. Like Adobe Project Locking for EVO, which lets multiple editors access the same project file simultaneously over their shared storage. It’s pretty cool.

Although the Team Projects feature is still in beta per Adobe, it’s a powerful tool when used in the right workflow. If you have the freedom to experiment with this new feature on some smaller projects you may find it works great for your needs.
